What's Happening to the Power Towers along North 21st Street

Update: Feb. 11, 2020

As part of this project, TPU is required to plant trees in compliance with the zoning code.

Public Works and the City’s urban forestry program located trees in compliance with the standards for intersection and stopping site distance. This work ensures the new trees don’t block sight lines, are sufficiently set back from the roadway, and are not in the way of future road improvements. View photos of Tacoma Power crews planting trees below.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The utility replaced 19 aging towers on and near North 21st Street with 12 steel poles in the median on every other block. As part of the project, the utility disconnected the Cushman Substation from the electrical system during the second half of 2018.
