Changing your home's lighting is one of the easiest ways to save energy and save money. When you switch from incandescent bulbs to Energy Star-rated CFLs, know that those bulbs can use up to 75 percent less energy than incandescent light bulbs and last up to 10 times longer - up to 10 years.

What to expect
Energy Star-rated CFLs start instantly but take several seconds to reach full brightness, especially when used outside at cold temperatures. CFLs save the most energy when used in fixtures that are on two hours or more at a time. Specially labeled Energy Star three-way CFLs are available for use in three-way lamps. Learn more about CFLs.

Proper disposal
CFLs contain very small amounts of mercury that bond over time with the phosphor coating on the tubing. You may properly dispose of burned-out bulbs at the City of Tacoma Landfill Household Hazardous Waste Collection site, the Hidden Valley Transfer Station in Puyallup or any area Home Depot or Bartell Drugs.
